The Pennsylvania State University system announced this week that it will move to the Direct Loan Program. The Direct Loan Program is the funding arm of the U.S. Department of Education and offers Stafford and PLUS loans, among others. The Direct Loan Program is funded by the U.S. Treasury.
Prior to this move, the Penn State system primarily used the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to fund the majority of loans for students. More than 44,000 students in the Penn State system borrow federal loans; 40,800 students attending Penn State schools borrowed federal loans through PHEAA, nearly the entire Penn State student population.

Lawsuit Probes College's Study-Abroad Program Billing Practices
By Carina Zaragoza
A lawsuit against a Massachusetts college was filed last month. The lawsuit alleges the college charges students in its study-abroad program full tuition and room and board even though the program costs thousands of dollars less. The lawsuit claims the college pockets the difference.
The lawsuit was brought by the family of a student who traveled to and lived in South Africa. The family paid the entire cost of attendance, which totaled $21,000 including room and board, though the student did not utilize campus facilities and despite the study-abroad program costing $4,439 less. This billing practice, and the question of where the overpayment goes, is at the center of the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges charging full tuition during a study-abroad semester is a deceptive practice.

| Two choices may be better than one this St. Patrick's Day weekend! |
A lot of us think of St. Patrick's Day primarily as an excuse to drink and party. Chugging green beer and wearing the color green are prominent traditions adhered to by many on this unique day in America, Ireland, and other parts of the world. This year, though, the day has raised some unusual ecclesiastical questions, and you may need to celebrate in a different way and on a different day this year...at least according to some religious leaders.
What is St. Patrick's Day? Aside from the bar hopping and other celebratory activities, there is actual history behind this fun day.

New Program Helps Ninth Graders

Florida Coastal School of Law students are giving back to the younger generation. Local attorneys and law students are visiting ninth-grade classrooms to explain the importance of budgeting and how to "avoid credit card debt." Thirty law students and 14 attorneys will visit the classrooms; each attorney will be paired with at least one law student. There will be four classes, each around 90 minutes long. The program is partially funded by a donation from the Jaguar Program of around $9,000. Wachovia Corp. has also given a $7,000 donation.

GPA Increase Proposal Causes Concerns

S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah is causing some controversy due to a new proposal. The law school is considering raising its current minimum GPA from 1.85 to 2.5. If approved, the change would be implemented for the 2008-2009 school year. It would affect first-year law students that year, unless otherwise noted. School officials claim the raise is necessary to ensure more of S.J. Quinney College of Law's graduates can pass the bar exam and become competent attorneys.
